Welcome To 2024

Welcome To 2024

The first wine Society meeting of 2024 saw 6 members flying the flag. With a themed night chosen by Alan, our treasurer, which was an Australian night. The only problem being that Alan brought a bottle from South Africa – even worse there was a map of Africa on the bottle. The most popular wine of the evening was a Jacob Creek Shiraz. 14.5%. Scoring a very creditable 14. But this was a double first ! The same wine, the same year, was provided by Jim and Neale. A bottle of Port was kindly provided by our Secretary, Wayne, to help welcome the new year.

Decanting and Ageing

Decanting and Ageing

At this weeks meeting we undertook an experiment on the virtues of decanting wine. The opinion on the benefits of decanting wine have always been a contentious topic. Courtesy of our President, Dave Llewellyn, we put it to the test with two bottles of Wollemi Shiraz from South Eastern Australia. The first bottle had been decanted an hour or two before being sampled, the second was opened immediately before being drunk

The decanted wine scored a very respectable 14 overall and the wine that had not been decanted scored 12.5. The decanted bottle of Wollemi was the most popular wine of the evening. The comments on aroma and taste were very much in favour of the decanted wine. See the details here …

To further our enjoyment of the evening our President read out one of his many poignant and amusing poems. This one was about “The Age You Feel” and can be enjoyed here:
