Seven Eleven

This week’s meeting saw seven members enjoy seven wines, leaving the Village a little before eleven o’clock.

We enjoyed wines from Spain, South Africa and Australia, with the two most popular wines of the evening being a South African Cabernet Sauvignon and a Spanish Rioja, courtesy of Jim and Paul respectively. Both scoring 12.86. The evening was rounded off with an excellent “Windsor” Port, kindly provided by Craig and there were Maltesers a plenty with several members supplying the Society’s favourite chocolate.

Happy Birthday Jim

Happy Birthday Jim

Our latest meeting saw us meeting in the home of our Chairman, Jim, on the occasion of his birthday. Due to works at the Ponthir Village Hall we were unable to meet there, so Jim stepped in to save the day!

A great evening was had by all and we are very grateful for Jim’s hospitality and his good wife for putting up with us.

Some excellent wines were sampled and Jim kindly provided a fine Port to finish the evening’s frivolities. The wines sampled can be viewed here …

Full House

Full House

Last night saw the societies last meeting for 2024. We had a full house with 11 of our subscribing members in attendance. As is our custom when we have 8 or more in attendance we paired up the attendees, with each pair bringing the exact same wine. Though someone did manage to bring the exact same wine but one bottle was a 2021 vintage and the other a 2022.

We enjoyed wines from Italy, Chile, Spain, Portugal and Australia. The most popular wine of the evening was an Italian Millefiori Appassimento Veneto, scoring a very creditable 14.1, courtesy of the Jim and Lewis pairing. The evening was finished with a glass of Port brought by our Scribe to celebrate the arrival of a grandson and our families in general as we approach the festive season. Our next meeting will be on Friday 10th January 2025 when the theme will be wines from the southern hemisphere.

Wine Pairs

Wine Pairs

This week the society held its Annual General Meeting to agree and update the rules and appoint a new Secretary for next year. Due to pressing work commitments our current secretary Wayne is stepping down. He has done a fantastic job for a number of years, organising the members and the meetings, particularly during the COVID-19 period. During the restrictions Wayne prepared and sanitised the meeting room, made sure it was well ventilated and thereby provided a safe environment for our meetings to continue in compliance with the restrictions in place at that time. Thank you for all your hard work. You will be sorely missed as Secretary.

Neale was elected our new secretary, commencing his duties in 2025. Thank you for volunteering Neale.

After the A.G.M. we sampled some excellent wines. We had 9 members and 1 guest in attendance, Anthony. Due to the numbers present we paired up so that each pairing brought the same wine, to allow us to sample a sufficient amount of the wine to fairly asses it. The theme for the evening chosen by our President Jim, was wines under 13.5% ABV. Of the 5 wines sampled the most popular of the evening was a Alkànie, Pinot Noir from Moldova scoring a very respectable 13.7 overall brought by the pairing of Lewis and his guest Anthony. The evening finished with a glass of Port courtesy of our Treasurer, Alan.

New Member and Microwave

New Member and Microwave

The Infamous 6 drink again.

A primativo/zinfandel evening chosen by Craig. The Cock-up of the evening was our Secretary Wayne bringing a cab sav wine from Chile 🇨🇱 🥲. Weird moment of the night was Neale announcing he cooked his wine for 1 minute in an 800w microwave 🤔. The favourite wine of the evening was Neale’s Zinfandel of U.S.A from Lodi. 14.5% A.B.V costing £5.60. Scoring a very respectful 14.5. Craig kindly brought the Maltesers & Port enjoyed by all attending the evening. Thank you Craig.

Paul became our latest member and we are looking forward to sampling many more wines with him!

Friday 13th. Unlucky?

Friday 13th. Unlucky?

The society’s meeting on Friday 13th turned out to be lucky for the 8 members present, enjoying red wines from France, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Australia and Spain. However, the evening started informally with a Blush wine courtesy of our newest member Lewis. The most popular wine of the evening was a Malbec from Argentina “The Wanderer” brought by Craig who also kindly supplied a bottle of Cockburn’s Special Reserve Port and the now obligatory Maltesers for all to enjoy. The next meeting will be themed one with the theme being selected by Craig.

Welcome Our New Member

Welcome Our New Member

This week saw 3 members, a second time guest and a third time guest enjoy wines from Italy, France, Spain, Chile and Greece. Our guest Lewis became our latest member to join the society. Before we started the serious business of sampling wine, we shared a chilled white Rioja courtesy of our Scribe, to cleanse and prepare our palates. The most popular wine of the evening was a Spanish Pata Negra Toro which scored a very respectable 14 overall, brought by our guest Paul. The Greek wine was, unfortunately the least popular with an 11.2 overall. The evening concluded with a French Bordeaux courtesy of our Pourer, Stuart.
